Learn to Sail in the World's Best Classroom
From a 2-day live-aboard introduction to internationally recognised skipper tickets — taught in steady trades on a real cruising ground.
From 'Interested' to 'Skipper'
Every level has a structured path here — each rung taught on real water, not in a classroom.
Introduction to Sailing
2 days/2 nights live-aboard: helm time, knots, sails and seamanship — often aboard a former Sydney–Hobart racer. ~$899–$1,050.
IYT qualifications
International Crew → Flotilla Skipper → Bareboat Skipper/ICC: the tickets charter companies worldwide recognise.
Private tuition afloat
An instructor aboard YOUR charter for a day or two — the fastest route from rusty to ready.
| Course | Duration | Typical cost | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Introduction to Sailing | 2 days / 2 nights | $899–$1,050 | Certificate of experience |
| Commercial Crew Course | 6 days | ~$1,500+ | IYT syllabus + logbook |
| Bareboat Skipper / ICC pathway | Multi-day | Course-dependent | Internationally recognised ticket |
| Private tuition on your charter | 1–2 days | Skipper rates | Confidence on your own boat |
Course fees usually include meals aboard. EMC reef fee (~$23) payable at check-in on some courses.
Theory Where It Matters
Passage briefings with charts you'll actually sail, knots you'll actually tie, anchorages you'll actually use — this week.
See Where You'll SailThe Whitsundays Advantage
- Real wind, most days — Steady trades mean genuine sailing every session — no windless drifting
- Forgiving waters — Reef-protected, line-of-sight, all-weather refuges everywhere
- Destinations included — Whitehaven and Hill Inlet double as training grounds
- Live-aboard immersion — Sleep aboard, stand watches, live the life for the course duration
- A real pathway — From intro course to skipper ticket to your own bareboat charter
- Commercial routes too — Maritime training in Airlie covers coxswain, first aid and more
Which course for which goal?
"I want to try sailing": the 2-day introduction — half holiday, half course. "I want to bareboat": introduction, or a skippered charter with intent. "I want a ticket": the IYT pathway. "I want to work on boats": commercial crew courses plus first aid through the local maritime training centre.
The classic progression: 2-day course → skippered days 1–2 of a bareboat charter → bareboat forever. Competence stacking, Whitsundays style.
Your Questions, Answered
Do courses give a real qualification?
The intro gives a certificate of experience; the IYT-pathway courses (Crew, Bareboat Skipper, ICC) are internationally recognised.
Can total beginners do the 2-day course?
Yes — it's designed for them. Expect practical helm time from hour one.
What does it cost?
Roughly $899–$1,050 for the 2-day live-aboard; longer IYT courses scale with duration. Meals usually included.
Is it all classroom?
The opposite — theory is brief and applied immediately on the water.
Can we learn on our own charter?
Yes — add a qualified instructor for a day or two. The fastest confidence-builder there is.
What should we do after the course?
Book a charter. The classic progression is course → skippered days → bareboat. Start with the bareboat guide.
