Manta Ray Bay

Named for its visitors: mantas cruise through in season. Superb coral on the southern head. Day anchoring only.

Maureen's Cove

The quiet all-rounder: shelter from most directions plus excellent reef at the eastern head.

What You'll See

  • Hard and soft corals — In good condition, starting 1–2m deep close inshore
  • Turtles — Green and hawksbill, often in pairs, remarkably unbothered by swimmers
  • Fish clouds — Sergeant majors, batfish, parrotfish in silly numbers
  • Anemones and clownfish — Nemo's whole extended family, throughout
  • Mantas (seasonal) — Cruising Manta Ray Bay mainly in winter and spring
  • Bombies in the shallows — Float, don't stand — for the reef's sake and your shins'

Reef-safe snorkelling

Enter off sand, shuffle over sand flats (resting stingrays), snorkel at high tide for depth and visibility, and never touch the coral. Reef-safe sunscreen or a rashie — the tropical UV out-suns any slathered-on SPF. Hook Island sits mid-way through the classic 7-day circuit, between Whitehaven and Hayman's Blue Pearl Bay.

FAQs

Your Questions, Answered

Which island has the Whitsundays' best snorkelling?

Hook Island's northern bays — Butterfly Bay, Manta Ray Bay and Maureen's Cove — hold the healthiest, most accessible fringing reef.

Snorkel from the beach or the boat?

Both work; most crews go straight off the boat, which also keeps the beach free for the dinghy.

Are there stingers at Hook Island?

June–October: no. November–May: stinger suits advised — carry them aboard and check daily advice.

Do we need to book moorings?

Public moorings are first-come. July: arrive by mid-afternoon. Shoulder season: pick of the buoys.

Is it OK for weak swimmers or kids?

Yes — much of the reef is in shallow, calm water. Fitted stinger suits and noodles make it easy; life jackets for littlies.

Can we fish here?

Check zones — parts of Hook Island waters are green no-fishing areas. Your briefing has the map.
