The World's Best Beach โ From Your Own Yacht
7km of 98% pure silica sand, the Hill Inlet swirls, and the anchoring knowledge to have it at golden hour when everyone else has gone.
Three Moves Most Visitors Never Make
Day-trippers get three hours of shared beach. Charter crews get the real Whitehaven.
Stay the night
Anchor off the southern end and have 7km of sand at golden hour โ and again at 7:30am in total emptiness.
Time Hill Inlet
The famous swirls show within two hours of low tide. Tongue Bay dinghy landing, 20-minute walk, postcard from the lookout.
Walk it barefoot
Silica doesn't hold heat โ midday walks stay comfortable. Toward Chance Bay you'll have the beach to yourselves.
| Know before you anchor | Detail |

Conditions and zone rules are confirmed in your charter briefing.
Golden Hour Belongs to Sailors
This is the shot day-trippers never get: the beach emptying, the light going gold, the water still bath-warm.
See When to SailWhat to Take and Do
- Camera + wide lens โ The inlet swirls from the lookout are the shot of the trip
- Snorkel gear โ Fringing reef patches at the southern end; the big reef day is Hook Island next
- Water and sun protection โ Shade is scarce and the UV is tropical
- Nothing loose โ The breeze that keeps you cool will take a towel in one gust
- A walk to Chance Bay โ 2km of empty white sand โ usually to yourselves
- A sunset swim โ 78% of the magic happens after the boats leave (estimate)
Whitehaven, briefly
Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island is the reason many people charter here at all. The silica sand is so pure it was used in the Hubble telescope's lens; it never gets hot underfoot. From your own yacht you get the two things day trips can't sell: early morning and the emptied-out evening. It's Day 2 of the classic 7-day circuit โ the biggest snorkelling days follow at Hook Island.
Your Questions, Answered
Can we anchor overnight at Whitehaven?
Yes, off the southern end in suitable conditions โ it's a favourite charter night. In strong northerlies, shift to Chance Bay.
How do we get to the Hill Inlet lookout?
Dinghy to Tongue Bay, then a signed 20-minute bushwalk to two lookouts over the inlet.
When exactly do we get the swirls?
Within about two hours of low tide โ check the tide table in your briefing and plan the walk accordingly.
How crowded is it really?
Busy 10amโ3pm at the southern end. Early morning, evening and the northern reaches are close to empty.
Is the sand really not hot?
Correct โ pure silica reflects heat. Barefoot midday walks are genuinely comfortable.
Can we fish or collect shells?
Marine park rules apply: no fishing in green zones, and shell collecting is restricted. The briefing covers it.
