Mornings Sailing, Afternoons in Paradise
Each day follows the same proven shape — short passage, long afternoon.
Morning
2–3 hour passage to the next island, done before the trade winds build
Midday
Snorkel the fringing reef, walk the lookout, or swim off the silica sand
Afternoon
Short hop to tonight's mooring — pick it before the light gets low
Evening
Sundowners in the cockpit, galley dinner, stars you've never seen
Day 2–3: Whitehaven and Hill Inlet
Anchor off the southern end for the emptied-out evening, then time the Hill Inlet lookout within two hours of low tide.
Full Whitehaven GuideThe Logic of the Route
- Shakedown first — Day 1's open-water crossing teaches the boat before the good stuff
- Trades on the beam — Clockwise turns SE trades into comfortable reaching most days
- Icons mid-week — Whitehaven and Hill Inlet land on days 2–3 when energy is highest
- Reef reward — Day 4's Butterfly Bay is the well-earned snorkelling payoff
- Marina night at the end — Hamilton on Day 6: hot showers and a restaurant before the run home
- All-weather exits — Cid, Nara and Macona refuges sit within reach of every leg
Weather contingencies
In strong SE trades this route keeps the breeze on the beam. If a southerly change is forecast, hold up in Cid Harbour or Nara Inlet — both all-weather — and resume when it passes. The itinerary flexes either direction; the anchors stay. Timing the season: best time to sail. Need a hand on deck? Skippered charters.
Your Questions, Answered
Is 7 days too long for a first charter?
It's ideal — days 1–2 are easy water to find your rhythm, and by mid-week most first-time skippers anchor confidently.
Can we do Whitehaven and Hill Inlet in one day?
You can, but you'll miss the empty-evening beach and the tide-timed lookout. Two days is the right pace.
What if the wind swings?
Every leg has an all-weather refuge nearby. Wait out a blow and resume — locals do it too.
Do we need to book Hamilton Island berths?
June–October: yes, as soon as your charter is booked. Shoulder season: often same-day.
Can this route work in 6 days?
Yes — drop Blue Pearl Bay and run Hook Island straight to Hamilton. The 7-night version is more humane.
Where does provisioning fit?
Shop or take delivery in Airlie the day before; top up fresh food at Hamilton Island on Day 6.
What Will This Week Cost?
Real seasonal prices for the boat, the skipper and everything else.
