The Anchor Every Route Shares
Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet swirls โ with the tide-timing knowledge to see it right.
Whitehaven Beach GuideThe Rules Behind Every Day
- Morning passages โ 5โ20nm done before lunch โ the trades build through the day
- Afternoons ashore โ Snorkel, lookout walk or beach โ the actual point of the trip
- Shelter first โ Every night stop is all-weather or a public mooring field
- Tide-timed highlights โ Hill Inlet near low tide, Whitehaven after 4pm โ built into the plan
- Plan B everywhere โ Each day names its weather alternative
- Permit-aware โ Marine park zones and mooring rules baked in
Permits and rules that shape a route
Your vessel needs a marine parks permit (usually included with charter). Some bays are green no-fishing zones; public moorings are first-come โ see the anchoring and moorings guide. July arrivals should aim for moorings by mid-afternoon. New to charters? Start with bareboat basics or compare adding a skipper.
Your Questions, Answered
How many days do we need?
Five to seven is the sweet spot โ enough for Whitehaven, the Hook Island reefs and Hamilton Island without rushing.
Can beginners follow these routes?
Yes โ short line-of-sight passages in sheltered water. First-timers often add a skipper for day one.
Which direction should we sail?
Both work. Clockwise (south first) gives the longest downwind legs home; counterclockwise keeps the SE trades on the beam.
What if the weather turns mid-week?
Cid Harbour, Nara Inlet and Macona Inlet are all-weather refuges within reach of every point on every route.
Are the itineraries rigid?
No โ they're frameworks. Swap days to suit wind, crowds and energy; the anchors (Whitehaven, Hook, Hamilton) stay.
Where do we start and finish?
Airlie Beach for most fleets; Hamilton Island for some. See the Airlie Beach guide for departure logistics.
